"For every image of the past that is not recognized by the present as one of its own concerns threatens to disappear irretrievably." (Walter Benjamin)
I often incorporate copies of historic artifacts in my work, as in this case the statue of the cosmic Buddha on view in the Smithsonian Museum of Asian Art in Washington DC. Looking back at those ancient artworks can inform our understanding of our current world as we are looking forward into the future, while giving us the sense of security that comes from objects that persist over time. Using 21st century technologies and materials as well as placing those ancient originals in a contemporary composition has the pieces hover in the twilight district, between past and future.
