Included in the portrait on the right is an excerpt of a letter dating May 1945 in the town of Fürstenwalde, just east of Berlin. It was written by the caretaker pharmacist of my grandparent's pharmacy and describes the destruction and chaos during the Russian invasion of their town as well as the final days of my grandfather and great grandmother.
