The portrait on the right is from a passport photo when I was in my early twenties. Superimposed is a letter written in 1945 by a girl just a few years younger. She wrote from her hometown just east of Berlin to my aunt, her friend, who had fled West. In it she describes the terror and helplessness she endured when being raped by Russian soldiers.
