The portrait on the right is from a passport photo when I was in my early twenties. The superimposed handwritten letter was written in 1945 by a girl just a few years younger. She wrote to my aunt, her friend who had fled West, and describes the terror and helplessness she endured when being raped by a Russian soldier.
