The central portrait is an image of my 40 something year old self and my grandmother superimposed. When she was that age in 1946, she undertook a harrowing train journey from the village near Hannover where they were refugees back to the hometown they fled to escape the Russian occupation. She wrote the included letter to her children, my aunt and father, whom she left behind for three months. She describes three harrowing days and nights on trains through the various occupation zones, bartering and bribing her way through with cigarettes as currency.
