My father was eleven in 1945 when he fled the Russian occupation of his home town east of Berlin with his mother and sister. He never saw his father and grandmother again. I was the same age in the image on the right. Pasted over it is my great grandmother's suicide note, written in the old German Sütterlin style. It speaks of the despair at the Russian occupation after the destruction of everything she knew and of endless love for her daughter and grandchildren, whom she was certain she would never see again.
